I’ve been a fan of the BTCC for years, since roughly 1998 if I recall correctly. Back then we had works powered Nissan Primeras and Honda Accords as well as the frankly absurd amounts of money that went into running the teams and cars up and down the field. There was a bit of a lull for a few years when the season stagnated but happily over recent years it’s really perked up and despite some bumps and controversies during the 2016 season, it really looks like 2017 is going to be electric!
We’ve got some huge names coming back to the fray, namely the return of BMW as a manufacturer team supporting WSR. BMW haven’t been a manufacturer team since the early Nineties when their paired up with the likes of Soper, and it’s fantastic to see the iconic colours returning to the grid. The pairing with WSR is sure to be a winner, not only is the team immensely experienced, they have 3 extremely solid drivers in the form of Colin Turkington, Andrew Jordan and Rob Collard. That’s a pretty formidable selection before they’ve even turned a wheel. Not to mention the Pirtek sponsored BMW looks frankly amazing.
Along with this we’ve got the return of a Vauxhall Astra to the grid, thanks to Power Maxed Racing. Again not only does the car look amazing in their distinctive livery, but they’ve also taken on Senna Proctor who made huge waves in the Renault Clio support category, which is the perfect stepping stone up to the BTCC. Good luck to those guys, I hope they can get a few more podiums and wins under their belt.
Lets not forget the currently title holders, Team Dynamics with Honda Racing, Matt Neal and Gordon Sheddon are sure fire contenders as always. Mat Jackson will also be looking to continue with his winning ways, and you’ll certainly see him coming in the newly liveried Shredded Wheat Ford Focus.
Less than 20 days to go! Until the chequered flag drops at Brands Hatch I don’t think you could pick a favourite!
